Kamiko Sushi’s Spicy Tuna, Spicy Crab Roll Lunch Special

Lunch specials are awesome.  Decently-priced and decently-portioned… what more could you ask for?!

The flavor of the day was Kamiko Sushi-Bar*, where I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll & Spicy Crab Roll combo off the lunch specials menu.  It came with a choice of (miso) soup or (mixed greens) salad, too.  Thinking I’d be healthy today, I opted for salad.

That’s the Ginger Salad, mixed greens with ginger dressing.  My favorite part was definitely the perfectly seasoned (i.e. not overwhelmingly sweet or salty) dressing, and I was pleasantly delighted that the bed of greens was not swimming a pool of liquid, as it normally is when you order a salad at other Japanese restaurants.  Don’t you just hate, HATE, H-A-T-E that?!  It’s been way too long since I’ve had an optimal greens-to-dressing ratio in my salad.  Taste rating?  Fine, 4 out of 5 stars!

Next up, the sushi rolls.  Spicy tuna (far right below) and spicy crab rolls, yum.  I wasn’t able to finish all 16 pieces — 16 pieces?! #portioncontrol — but I alternated between tuna and crab throughout the entire meal.  Not bad rolls, IMO.  And the spicy mayo sauce — the orange stuff towards the middle of the picture below — that came with the rolls was really good!  I’m generally not a fan of ginger or wasabi though, so those sat untouched for the duration of the meal.

Did you know?  You can make your own knockoff spicy mayo by adding srirachia — and (optional) lime juice — to mayo.  If you’re interested, check out the Serious Eats recipe here!

I think I liked the spicy crab a bit more than the spicy tuna.  I’m pretty sure the restaurant used imitation crab in the crab roll, but that makes dunking it in spicy mayo that much better, since the fusion of sweet and salty is one of my favorite taste profiles.

The sesame seeds on the sushi rolls were still crunchy by the end of the meal, so I could tell the ingredients were fresh.  Overall, the meal rated fine, maybe even borderline good — that’s 5 out of 5 — on my scale.  Yummy food and nice presentation.  Now that’s what I call a win.  Needless to say, I was a pretty happy camper, especially since I had enough leftovers for a second meal!  #secondlunch
